Cottonport Louisiana
Cottonport was founded in the early 1800s along the banks of Bayou Rouge (French for Red Bayou). In the 1800s, large boats made their way through Cottonport with goods for the port of New Orleans. The boats would deliver and load cargo into the area to take to larger ports along the route. Cotton was the main crop being exported at the time. So much cotton was being shipped from the port, early settlers named the village Cottonport.
Today, Cottonport retains many of its picturesque qualities. Bayou Rouge continues to be used as a fishing and boating outlet. It also serves as the backdrop to the annual Cottonport Christmas Festival, held the second weekend in December.

Alexandria Louisiana
Alexandria's site was a natural one for settlement because of its location on the Red River, which is one of the area's main arteries of transportation. In 1769, the section of what is now Rapides Parish was deeded by France to Spain. Alexandria developed rapidly as a trading post, serving as a center of traffic between the French, Spanish, English, Americans and Native Americans. The area's lumber industry growth in the latter part of the 19th century and the opening of the area by the railroads allowed Alexandria to prosper immensely.

Alexandria's most popular attraction is the Alexandria Zoo. It features over 600 animals from all over the world as well as an award-winning exhibit on the Louisiana habitat. The Alexandria Museum of Arts is one of 4 accredited art museums in the state. The River Oaks Arts Center is a contemporary visual arts and crafts center. Kent House is one of the oldest surviving plantations in Louisiana. Alexandria's Mardi Gras began in central Louisiana in 1994, and now has an estimated parade attendance of 110,000. Other cultural needs are met by Ballet Alexandria, the Coughlin Saunders Performing Arts Center, the City Park Players, the Family Playhouse and Red River Dance Theatre Company.
Kisatchie National Forest, Louisiana's only national forest, is spread across 7 parishes and is divided into 5 managed units that total 604,000+ acres of public lands. Other recreational areas include Dewey Wills Wildlife Management Area, Valentine Lake Recreation Area, Cotile Recreation Area, Kincaid Recreation Area and others. Nearby is Bringhurst Golf Course, popularly known as "the nation's oldest par three course." Alexandria is also home to four other golf courses: Oak Wing, The Links on the Bayou, LSUA and Alexandria Golf and Country Club.
